News G8: In Moscow a meeting of the heads of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of countries from the Group of Eight

Ôîòî ñ ñàéòà www.g8russia.ru Last week in the capital of Russia a meeting of foreign ministers from member countries of the G8 took place. The main theme of the meeting was the preparation of the summit in St. Petersburg, which will take place in mid-July.

The ministers discussed the three main questions of the G8: education, the struggle with infectious disease and the most charged topic – energy. A document has been prepared which focuses on the need of preserving the interests of consumers, suppliers and intermediaries. The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov explained the situation concerning the transport of gas to western Europe, stating that Russia would reliably transfer fuel for the next forty years, if her partners had a stable demand for it. «We will, as indeed we have for the past 40 years, provide for the reliable export of fuel. We only desire that it will be balanced by a reliable demand. Since this is a long term problem, we want to be certain that our reputation as a reliable source should never be broken by the breach of any contracts, or by any quantity, not even by one gram or cubic millimeter, it would be valued if we had reliable partners in our consumers», - Vesti.ru cited Lavrov as saying.

A curious fact was discovered at the Press-conference for journalists. Sergei Lavrov and Condoleezza Rice unexpectedly discovered an unknown detail concerning their lives. Responding to a question about the situation of democracy in Russia, Rice talked about her first visit to the USSR in 1979, and how she has noticed many changes since then. In response, the head of the MFA, Lavrov said that: «coincidently I was first in the United States in 1979 and have likewise noticed changes, many of which we try to discuss with our American partners», - reports RIA Novosti.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov expressed his surprise at the meeting of heads of foreign affairs from G8 countries. “We examined the entire spectrum of agendas for the G8” – Interfax cited Lavrov. He underlined that on examining the questions, the participants of the meeting took into account the positions of other countries on those and any other problems.
